Compositions comprising water, microbicidally active 3-isothiazolone compound, and an effective stabilizing amount of unsaturated, cyclic iodosyl or iodyl compound of formula I and II Image Image (I) (II) wherein: X = C(O), SO2, OPO3H, CH2C(O); y= O, NR3; R1 = H, Cl, Br, I, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C18 alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted C2-C18 alkenyl, substituted or unsubstituted C4-C6 aryl, substituted or unsubstituted C7-C10 aralkyl; R2 = H, Cl, Br, I, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C18 alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted C2-C18 alkenyl, substituted or unsubstituted C4-C6 aryl, substituted or unsubstituted C7-C10 aralkyl, SO3H, CO2R4, C(O)NR5R6; R1 and R2 may by joined to form a substituted or unsubstituted 5 or 6 membered ring, optionally fused to another 5 or 6 membered aromatic ring; R3 = H, C(O)R7, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C18 alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted C2-C18 alkenyl, substituted or unsubstituted C4-C6 aryl, substituted or unsubstituted C7-C10 aralkyl; R4 = H, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C18 alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted C2-C18 alkenyl, substituted or unsubstituted C4-C6 aryl, substituted or unsubstituted C7-C10 aralkyl, (CH2CH2)p-OH, M; R5 = H, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C18 alkyl, CH2CH2SO3H, CH2CH2SO3M; R6 = H, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C18 alkyl; R7 = H, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C18 alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted C2-C18 alkenyl, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C6 aryl, substituted or unsubstituted C7-C10 aralkyl; R8, R9, R10 are independently selected from the group consisting of CN, OH, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, Cl, Br, F, NO2, SO3M, SO3M, OCH2CH2N+R63X--, CO2H, CO2M, OPO3H; M = a monovalent or divalent metal cation; X = halogen; n = 0, 1; and p = 1-30, are disclosed. Also disclosed are methods of stabilizing a microbicidally active 3-isothiazolone in a water solution comprising introducing an effective stabilizing amount of unsaturated, cyclic iodosyl or iodyl compound offormula I and II.
