An apparatus and method for locking and unlocking mobile telecommunications handsets or other devices is disclosed. Each handset is unactivated at the time of purchase. Other than emergency calls, or account activation, no calls can be made using the handset unless it has been unlocked. The handset is capable of receiving a readable subscriber identity module (SIM) having a network (or other) ID and a codeword, and its operation is to be locked and unlocked with respect to the entity corresponding to the ID on the SIM. Futhermore, the handset includes a processor programmed witha unique equipment identification number and a key. All handsets manufactured as part of a particular batch may include the key, which is burned or otherwise written into a memory area of the handset so that it may not be read without its being destroyed. The handset processor is also programmed to produce a handset- specific key as a function of the equipment identification number and the batch-specific key. Upon activation of the handset, the customer service center associated with the network operator transmits a modifier to the handset. The handset changes its handset-specific key according to the modifier to yield an operator-specific key. The resulting operator-specific key is used in conjunction withthe network (or other) ID (from the SIM) to produce a checkword. If the checkword matches the codeword, which is read off the SIM, the handset is unlocked (i.e., enabled) for normal use. Other features of the invention include relocking the handset according to similar principles, and providing a personal identification number for permanently unlocking the device, so that it can be used with any compatible SIM.
La présente invention concerne un appareil et un procédé permettant le verrouillage et le déverrouillage de combinés téléphoniques mobiles ou d'autres équipements. Au moment de l'achat, tout combiné est à l'état "non mis en service". En dehors des appels d'urgence ou de l'appel de mise en service, aucun appel ne peut être fait tant que le combiné n'a pas été déverrouillé. Le combiné, qui est capable de recevoir un module d'identification d'abonné ou module SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) pourvu d'un code d'identification réseau (ou autre) et d'un mot de code, voit son fonctionnement limité au verrouillage et déverrouillage en fonction de l'identité correspondant au code d'identification du module SIM. En outre, le combiné comporte un processeur ayant reçu par programmation un numéro unique d'identification d'appareil et une clé. Tous les combinés fabriqués en un même lot peuvent être équipés de cette clé, qui est enregistrée par claquage ou tout autre procédé dans une zone de la mémoire du combiné, de façon à ne pas pouvoir être lue sans se détruire. Le processeur de combiné est également programmé pour produire une clé spécifique du combiné, résultant du code d'identification du combiné et de la clé spécifique du lot de fabrication. Lors de la mise en service du combiné, le centre de service client dépendant de l'opérateur du réseau émet un modificateur à destination du combiné. Le combiné utilise le modificateur pour modifier sa clé spécifique de combiné de façon à obtenir une clé spécifique d'opérateur. La clé spécifique d'opérateur, utilisée en association avec le code d'identification réseau (ou autre) du module SIM, permet de produire un mot de contrôle. Si le mot de contrôle correspond au mot de code lu et effacé sur le module SIM, le combiné se déverrouille (se valide) pour une utilisation normale. L'invention concerne également d'autres fonctionnalités telles que le reverrouillage du combiné en employant des principes analogues et la fourniture d'un numéro d'identification personnel permettant de déverrouiller de façon permanente l'appareil pour qu'il puisse être utilisé avec n'importe quel module SIM compatible.
