A method for making non-metallic doorknobs having complex, life-like shapes. A solid plastic (e.g. polypropylene) core is injection molded into any desired three dimensional shape around a closed end of a cylindrical metal shank, such that the opposite end of the shank projects outwardly from the core to form a neck for assembly with a latching assembly at the door. A soft, resilient plastic skin is injection molded over the plastic core to mirror the shape thereof. The soft skin may be provided with texture and/or pigmentation to enhance the artistic nature and realism of the particular shape of the doorknob. Moreover, the soft skin covering the core makes the doorknob easy to grasp and better able to avoid damage to itself and to an adjacent wall into which the knob may be moved.
