Embodiments of a price changing system for coin-operated vending devices are described. A preferred embodiment of the invention is used with newspaper vending machines, wherein the proposed price changes in the vending machines are set by service persons through the use of handheld wand which communicates with the machines. The wand incorporates a simplified interface with the vending machine via a tamper-proof switch, and has neither a keyboard, nor a video or screen display. The handheld wand may also open the newsrack door when docked at the machine interface.
