A data reproducing apparatus and a data recording/ reproducing apparatus in which variations in the amplitude and the offset in the playback signals caused by variations in the drive and the medium may be absorbed in reproducing data from a magneto-optical disc without requiring an adjustment process from driver to drive. Data is reproduced by an optical head optically scanning a track of a magneto-optical disc on which the data is recorded along with amplitude reference pattern in a data area provided along with a servo area in a track of the disc. The gain and the offset of reproduced data are controlled by a gain control amplifier and an offset control amplifier for data reproduction. With the playback signals whose gain and the offset have been controlled in this manner, the upper level and the lower level of the amplitude reference pattern are detected by an upper level latch circuit and a lower level latch circuit, while the amplitude value and the offset value are calculated by an amplitude value calculating circuit and an offset value calculating circuit for controlling the gain control amplifier and the offset control amplifier.
