A shank insert for a shoe comprises a flat, generally rectangular plate member having a front edge, a rear edge and opposed first and second major surfaces. The shank insert is embedded in the instep region of a sole comprised of a flexible polymeric material. The shank insert has a rigidity greater than that of the sole and therefore provides support and reduces the tendency of the sole to twist or bend. In addition, the shank insert is preferably incorporated into the bottom of the sole so that one major surface of the insert is visible.
