An automated container handling and processing system (10) includes metal and plastic container handling subsystems (12,12') each of which includes a conveyor (14,14') for conveying a plurality of large bins (26) carrying previously identified crushed containers. An automated dumping station (32,32') receives and inverts the bins (26) to dump the previously identified crushed containers into a central hopper (20,20'), then sends the bins to a washer (56,56'). A first belt conveyor (86,86') receives containers which do not require identification or accounting, and a second belt conveyor (92,92') receives containers from sorting machines (94) which are capable of reading a bar code on each container to identify the brand and of providing that information to a central accounting system. Both conveyors lead to the central hopper (20,20') which feeds all containers to a crusher/baler (16,16').
