A lifting apparatus is disclosed, comprising: a rail extending upwardly against a wall of a vehicle; a trolley mounted for movement along the rail; a bale lift attached to the trolley and having an operating position in which the bale lift extends outward from the trolley to define a bale-lift platform; the trolley having a range of motion from at or near a base of the wall to a position at or near a roof of the vehicle; and a drive for the trolley. A method is also disclosed, comprising: orienting a bale lift platform perpendicularly outward from a lifting plate that runs along an upwardly extending rail in a plane parallel to a face of a vehicle; placing a load on the bale lift platform; raising the lifting plate until an upper surface of the bale lift platform extends at or above the rail and above a roof of the vehicle; and removing the load from the bale lift platform onto the roof of the vehicle.
