A method is provided for designing a hierarchical architecture for a synchronous optical network (SONET) given a plurality of demand nodes at which communications traffic originates and at least one destination node at which thecommunications traffic is collected for transmission to a switch. The method includes the steps of: (a) dividing the plurality of demand nodes into distinct groups of demand nodes; (b) selecting at least one node for each group to serve as a ring hub for connection to a backbone ring; (c) designing a backbone ring topology that includes at least the ring hubs and the destination node; (d) designing an access ring topology for each of the demand node groups so that the backbone ring and accessring topologies constitute a preliminary network topology; (e) evaluating a costassociated with the preliminary network topology; (f) selecting at least one alternative ring hub to provide a new set of ring hubs; (g) repeating steps (c)-(e) for the new set of ring hubs to determine if a resulting network cost estimate is reduced; (h) repeating steps (f)-(g) until a minimum cost network topology is produced. Other aspects of the invention are directed to hub and spoke topology design and SONETtransport design.
L'invention est une méthode servant à élaborer une architecture hiérarchique pour un réseau optique synchrone (SONET) dans lequel le trafic de communication est engendré à une pluralité de noeuds de demande et est transmis à un noeud de destination au moins où il est saisi pour être retransmis à un commutateur. La méthode de l'invention comprend les opérations suivantes : a) répartition de la pluralité de noeuds de demande en groupes distincts de noeuds de demande; b) sélection pour chaque groupe d'un noeud au moins devant servir de concentrateur de connexion à un anneau de base; c) élaboration d'une topologie d'anneau de base incluant au moins les concentrateurs d'anneau et le noeud de destination; d) élaboration d'une topologie d'anneau d'accès pour chacun des groupes de noeuds de demande telle que les topologies des anneaux de base et des anneaux d'accès forment une topologie de réseau préliminaire; e) évaluation du coût de cette topologie de réseau préliminaire; f) sélection d'un concentrateur d'anneau de rechange au moins pour créer un nouvel ensemble de concentrateurs d'anneau; g) répétition des opérations c) à e) pour ce nouvel ensemble de concentrateurs d'anneau afin de déterminer si le coût estimé du réseau résultant est moindre; h) répétition des opérations f) à g) jusqu'à ce qu'on obtienne la topologie de réseau la moins onéreuse. D'autres aspects de l'invention portent sur une topologie en étoile et sur un système de transmission SONET.
