The invention is particularly described in relation to human hypertension (high blood pressure) in an adult study group and as a predictive marker for hypertension in an adolescent study group. In a particular embodiment there is described the use of human cheek epithelial cells to measure sodium ion (Na+) transport using radiolabelled 22Na+. Also disclosed is the use of cheek cell Na+ transport activity as a predictive marker for hypertension.
