A method and apparatus is disclosed for detecting unusual conditions relating to a structure, such as collision of an object with the structure or vandalism. The method and apparatus are particularly useful with respect to large structures which are accessible to the public, such as bridges. A continuous video picture is taken of the structure, and the output video is stored for a predetermined period, after which it is discarded. Audio emissions from the structure in a preselected frequency band are detected and compared with records of known usual emissions from said structure in said band. If there are anomalies, the video record is stored for longer than the predetermined period, and the current video output is examined in real time for evidence of an unusual occurrence.
