ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A traction device including a bit having a penetrating surface for penetrating a riding surface. The penetrating surface defines the cross sectional area of the bit and includes a plurality of facets wherein each facet intersects a common vertex. In a second embodiment, the penetrating surface defines an oval cross section transverse to the direction of penetration into a riding surface, wherein the circumference of the cross section increases as the distance from the tip increases. -12-
