A wireless communication system includes a plurality of wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs) (110, 115, 120) and an access point (AP) (105). The AP communicates with the WTRUS via an antenna. In one embodiment, the AP configures the antenna to a wide beam configuration that covers a desired service area and transmits a Request-To-Send (RTS) control message. When the AP receives a Clear-To-Send (CTS) from one of the WTRUs, the AP determines optimal antenna settings for communication with the one WTRU. The AP configures the antenna to a narrow beam configuration and transmits at least one data packet to the one WTRU. When the AP receives an acknowledgement message indicating that the data packet was successfully received by the WTRU, the AP configures the antenna to the wide beam configuration. In another embodiment, the AP is configured to transmit and receive data packet fragments from the WTRUs and configure the antenna accordingly.
L'invention concerne un système de communication sans fil comprenant une pluralité d'unités d'émission/de réception sans fil (WTRU) et un point d'accès (AP). L'AP communique avec les WRTU par l'intermédiaire d'une antenne. Dans un mode de réalisation, l'AP configure l'antenne en une configuration à large faisceau qui couvre une zone de service voulue et envoie un message de commande de demande d'émission (RTS). Lorsque l'AP reçoit un message de commande de signal de voie libre (CTS) émanant d'une des WTRU, l'AP détermine les réglages d'antenne optimaux pour assurer la communication avec une WTRU. L'AP configure l'antenne en une configuration à faisceau étroit et envoie au moins un paquet de données à une WTRU. Lorsque l'AP reçoit un message d'accusé de réception indiquant que le paquet de données a bien été reçu par la WTRU, l'AP configure l'antenne en configuration à large faisceau. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, l'AP est configuré pour émettre et recevoir des fragments de paquet de données provenant des WTRU et pour configurer l'antenne en conséquence.
