A hydrogen separator that includes a thin hydrogen permeable foil having a thickness between 3 and 15 microns. The foil is bonded to a support structure. The support structure is formed to have an undulating surface. The surface includes contact areas on which are secured the foil. The foil generally conforms to the undulating surface. The foil is only secured to the contact areas of the support structure; this enables the foil to move in three directions as it expands and contracts when exposed to the hydrogen source stream. The contact areas are spaced relatively closely in comparison to the foil thickness and enable the thin foil to withstand high pressures.
