An electrode catalyst for fuel cells which comprises a conductive carbon, platinum supported on the conductive carbon in an amount of from 20% by mass to 70% by mass based on the mass of the catalyst, and oxygen bonded chemically to the conductive carbon and present in the range of from 0.7 to 3 in atomic ratio to the platinum. The present electrode catalyst can attain a high activity because the platinum crystallite diameter has been kept small even when the platinum is supported in a large quantity in the amount more than 20% by mass. The catalyst is useful in fuel cells, e.g., solid polymer electrolyte fuel cells.

Un catalyseur d'électrode pour piles à combustible se composant de carbone conducteur, de platine supporté par le carbone conducteur dans une proportion de 20 à 70 % par masse en fonction de la masse du catalyseur, et d'oxygène lié chimiquement au carbone conducteur et présent dans une proportion de 0,7 à 3 % par rapport au platine. Le présent catalyseur d'électrode peut atteindre une activité élevée en raison du petit diamètre du cristallite de platine lorsque le platine est supporté en grande quantité dans une proportion de plus de 20 % par masse. Le catalyseur est utile dans les piles à combustible, par exemple des piles à combustible à électrolyte polymère solide.
