A document has a substrate with a first side. The first side has a first area within which the substrate is a first color. The document also has a plurality of marks on the substrate within a second area. The second area is smaller than the first area and is within the first area. Each mark is a different color from the first color. The density and size of the marks is such that at a distance of about twenty inches, the first area appears to the human eye to have a shaded area corresponding to the second area, as well as an unshaded area corresponding to a portion of the first area not occupied by the second area. At a distance of about eight inches, the second area appears to the human eye to have a plurality of marks. The method of making the document begins by providing a substrate, as described above. Next, a plurality of marks are printed on the substrate within the second area.
