Pour satisfaire à une demande variable d'oxygène gazeux, on fait passer un débit constant d'oxygène liquide de la double colonne de distillation dans un réservoir, et on soutire de celui-ci un débit variable d'oxygène liquide, qui est vaporisé dans un échangeur de chaleur par condensation d'un débit correspondant d'air entrant. L'air liquéfié est stocké dans un second réservoir, d'où un débit constant d'air liquéfié est envoyé dans la double colonne.
