The invention relates to a process for splitting polyurethanes,comprising splitting comminuted polyurethanes in a mixture of 10-90% by weight,of water and 90-10% by weight of a non-aqueous solvent at a temperature of at least 180°C and at a pressure of at least 4 bar, at a ratio of water per mol of a urethane bond in the polyurethane of at least 1 mol.
