L'invention porte sur l'utilisation de protoxyde d'azote (N2O) ou d'un donneur d'un tel composé pour fabriquer tout ou partie d'un médicament, de préférence sous forme inhalable, destiné à traiter , à minimiser ou à prévenir une détérioration post-ischémique de cellules cérébrales, en particulier consécutive à un accident vasculaire cérébral (AVC). Le médicament contient une quantité allant jusqu'à 80% en volume de N2O. Le médicament contient, en outre, de 19 à 25% en volume d'oxygène et éventuellement de l'azote et/ou une quantité inférieure à 60% en volume de xénon.
