A wheel (100) with a self-contained drive mechanism is provided to propel (or assist in propulsion of) bicycles, tricycle, and similar vehicles. The wheel includes and internal support (110) supporting a drive motor (111) and external supports (106R, 106L) fixed to tire (101). The wheel is readily received within the dropouts of a bicycle frame or fork to be attached therein by a standard quick-release mechanism (103). Thus, the wheel may be added to (or removed from) preexisting standard bicycles.
