L'invention concerne une réacteur pour effectuer des réactions chimiques en phase gazeuse, comportant au moins un compartiment (8) comprenant un garnissage catalytique (31) dans lequel circule radialement au moins un gaz. Il comporte, en guise de paroi supérieure (32), au moins une couche (19) d'au moins un matériau souple tel qu'un tissu, en matière réfractaire, inerte et étanche. Ce tissu coopère éventuellement avec une première couche de billes (12) qui repose sur le tissu. Il est disposé sur le garnissage (31) de telle façon qu'il assure un recouvrement total de celui-ci. Ce réacteur est notamment applicable au reformage des essences.
