The invention is based on selective inhibition of the collagen-degrading enzyme MMP-1, which causes the dermal matrix damage in humans, while sparing the enzyme(s) MMP-9 and perhaps MMP-2, which not only do not cause damage (based on extrapolation from our in vitro collagen gel system to real skin) but actually "clear away" the damage produced by MMP-1 to restore normal function to the skin. Matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1; fibroblast collagenase) is induced by UV radiation from the sun and is naturally elevated in old age. Human fibroblasts exposed to the degradation products of MMP-1 contract collagen, but when this debris is removed from their environment, the fibroblasts behave normally. Inhibiting MMP-1 but sparing (or inhibiting to a much lesser extent) enzymes that remove debris improves human skin after onslaught from solar UV radiation, old age, and acne.

Le procédé selon l'invention consiste à inhiber sélectivement l'enzyme de dégradation du collagène, la métalloprotéinase matricielle MMP-1, laquelle provoque chez l'homme des dommages au niveau du derme, et à épargner en même temps l'enzyme MMP-9 et éventuellement l'enzyme MMP-2 -lesquelles non seulement ne provoquent pas ces dommages (d'après une extrapolation réalisée à partir de notre système de gel collagène in vitro, sur de la peau) mais font disparaître les dommages produits par l'enzyme MMP-1-, afin de restaurer les fonctions normales cutanées. La MMP-1 (fibroblaste collagénase) est induite par les rayons ultraviolets du soleil et sa présence est élevée chez les personnes âgées. Les fibroblastes humains exposés aux produits de dégradation de MMP-1 contractent le collagène, mais lorsque ce débris est éliminé de leur environnement, les fibroblastes se comportent normalement. Le fait d'inhiber la MMP-1, tout en épargnant (ou en inhibant à un moindre degré) des enzymes qui éliminent ce débris, améliore la peau de l'homme après les agressions dues aux rayons ultraviolets solaires, au vieillissement et à l'acné.
