A computer-modeled surface may be an abstract or real surface, and a data representation of the abstract or real surface is used within the computer system as a surface model. In one aspect of the present invention computer- modeled material is distributed over the computer-modeled surface. A coated surface model is produced incorporating the distributed computer-modeled material. The surface model is divided into a plurality of regions. An amount of computer-modeled material to distribute to each region is determined by emitting particles from launch sites associated with the regions. Trajectories reaching a plurality of proximity areas with respect to a plurality of determine an amount of computer-modeled material to allocate to the region. In another aspect of the invention, computer-modeled material is redistributed after it is distributed onto the regions of the surface model. An elevation of each region with its corresponding amount of computer-modeled material is determined. Elevations which are high with respect to adjacent elevations result in a quantity of the material being moved from one region to another region. Thus, computer-modeled material is distributed and re-distributed over a computer-modeled surface.
