ABSTRACT A method and apparatus for converting solid, typically considered non-recyclable waste into a useable product is disclosed. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a pre-sizer to receive non-recyclable waste from a surge hopper and reduce the waste to particles of a first particle sizer. From the pre- sizer, the particles are conveyed to a final sizer 16 wherein they are reduced to particles of a second particle size smaller than the first particle size. From the final sizer, the particles are conveyed to a first separator in the form of a mechanical vibratory screener. Between the final sizer and the separator are located two additional separators designed to remove metal, rubber and/or vinyl material from the particles. The first separator screens the particles and has three or more outlets, at least one outlet for oversized particles, at least oneoutlet for undersized particles and at least one outlet for particles of the desired sizer. The outlet for the oversized particles leads to a feedback conveyor system which runs back to the inlet of the final sizer. The outlets for the desired andundersized particles lead to respective storage chambers.
