For the selective desulphurization of gases, the invention makes use a physically acting scrubbing agent whose basic struc- ture is a heterocycle with five or more ring atoms which include two hetero- atoms, one of which is nitrogen and the other oxygen or nitrogen, the hetero-atoms being in one of the positions from 1,2 to 1,n/2 when the ring has an even number of atoms and in one of the positions from 1,2 to 1,(n-1)/2 when the ring has an odd number of atoms. In addition, the nitrogen hetero-atoms(s) may be bound in the ring by either a double or a single bond and may be substituted by organyls.
