There is provided a spermicidal agent which is capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide (O2-) and hydrogen peroxide, in the presence of spermatozoa. Preferably, the agent is a 1,4-naphthoquinone represented by formula (I). Each group A can be H or any electron releasing moiety which enhances the ability of the agent to produce reactive oxygen species. The agent of the invention is also effective against microorganisms and can therefore be used to combat sexually transmitted diseases such as Chlamydia or HIV. Also provided for by the present invention is a method of contraception utilising said spermicidal agent.
L'invention concerne un agent spermicide qui est susceptible de générer des espèces d'oxygène réactives (ROS), telles que du superoxyde (O¿2??-¿) et du peroxyde d'hydrogène, en présence de spermatozoïdes. De préférence, l'agent est une 1,4-naphthoquinone représentée par la formule (I). Chaque groupe A peut représenter H ou toute fraction libérant des électrons qui améliore la capacité de l'agent à produire des espèces d'oxygène réactives. L'agent selon l'invention est également efficace pour lutter contre des micro-organismes et peut, par conséquent, être utilisé pour combattre les maladies sexuellement transmissibles telles que la chlamydia ou le VIH. L'invention se rapporte également un procédé de contraception utilisant ledit agent spermicide.
