A process of producing solution heat treated aluminum alloy sheet material comprises subjecting hot- or cold-rolled aluminum alloy sheet to solution heat treatment followed by quenching and, before substantial age hardening has taken place, subjecting the alloy sheet material to one or more subsequent heat treatments involving heating the material to a peak temperature in the range of 100 to 300 ~C (preferably 130-270 ~C), holding the material at the peak temperature for a period of time less than about 1 minute, and cooling the alloy from the peak temperature to a temperature of 85 ~C or less. The sheet material treated in this way can be used for automotive panels and has a good "paint bake response", i.e. an increase in yield strength from the T4 temper to the T8X temper upon painting and baking of the panels.
Un procédé, qui permet de produire une feuille d'alliage d'aluminium par recuit de mise en solution, consiste à soumettre une feuille d'alliage d'aluminium laminée à chaud ou à froid à un recuit de mise en solution suivi d'une trempe et, avant tout durcissement par vieillissement substantiel, à la soumettre à un ou plusieurs traitements thermiques ultérieurs impliquant de chauffer ce matériau à une température maximum située entre 100 et 300 ~C (et de préférence entre 130 et 270 ~C), à maintenir ce matériau à cette température maximum pendant moins d'une minute environ et à refroidir l'alliage en le faisant passer de cette température à une température de 85 ~C ou moins. Le matériau en feuille ainsi traité peut servir pour des tôles d'automobiles et il présente une bonne réaction lors de la peinture au four, c'est-à-dire une augmentation de résistance à l'allongement le faisant passer des états de dureté T4 à T8X lors de sa peinture et de sa cuisson.
