Methods and compositions are provided for binding hematopoietic stem cells. The methods generally employ a binding partner that forms a complex with a sialylated lactosamine structure present on the surface of stem cells. The formation of such complexes facilitates, for example, immobilization, purification, identification and targeting of hematopoietic stem cells. The compositions described herein generally comprise a binding partner, which may be free, attached to a support material or linked to a label or therapeutic agent.
