A wireless local or metropolitan area network (10) may include a plurality of stations (11, 12) for transmitting data therebetween using a media access layer (MAC), where each of the stations has a respective MAC address associated therewith. The wireless network (10) may also include a policing station (13) for detecting intrusions into the wireless network by monitoring transmissions among the plurality of stations to detect frame check sequence (FCS) errors from a MAC address, and generating an intrusion alert based upon detecting a number of FCS errors for the MAC address exceeding a threshold. The policing station (13) may also detect intrusions based upon one or more of failed MAC address authentications, illegal network allocation vector (NAV) values, and unexpected contention or contention-free operation.
Un réseau local sans fil ou un réseau métropolitain peut comprendre une pluralité de stations permettant de transmettre des données entre elles au moyen d'une couche d'accès au support (Mac), chacune de ces stations possédant une adresse MAC respective associée. Le réseau sans fil peut aussi comprendre une station de police permettant de détecter des intrusions dans le réseau sans fil par la surveillance des transmissions parmi la pluralité de stations afin de détecter des erreurs de séquence de contrôle de trame (FCS) à partir d'une adresse MAC et, permettant de générer une alerte d'intrusion fondée sur la détection pour une adresse MAC d'un certain nombre d'erreurs de FCS dépassant un seuil. La station de police peut aussi détecter des intrusions à partir d'un ou de plusieurs échecs d'authentification d'adresse MAC, de valeurs de vecteur d'attribution de réseau (NAV) illégaux et de conflit imprévus ou de fonctionnement sans conflit.
