A mechanism for decreasing the latency in an IP address assignment process for mobile systems using IP as network layer protocol is described. The proposed system is aimed at supporting seamless hand-offs for real-time applications like VOIP. A set of optimized messages is defined to eliminate the need for exchanging long DHCP messages to acquire an IP address. The mechanism involves splitting the IP address assignment functionality into two parts, with the base station being responsible for assigning IP addresses to individual end user devices, and the Mobile Switching Center assigning a block of IP addresses to each base station.
Linvention concerne un mécanisme permettant de diminuer la latence dans un procédé dattribution dadresse IP pour des systèmes mobiles utilisant le protocole IP comme protocole de couche réseau. Le système proposé vise à soutenir des transferts sans coupure pour des applications en temps réel telles que VOIP. Un ensemble de messages optimisés est défini pour éliminer la nécessité déchanger de longs messages DHCP pour acquérir une adresse IP. Le mécanisme consiste à diviser la fonctionnalité dattribution dadresse IP en deux parties, la station de base étant responsable de lattribution des adresses IP aux dispositifs dutilisateur finals individuels, et le centre de commutation mobile attribuant un bloc dadresses IP à chaque station de base.
