Pour purifier un liquide organique quasi anhydre, on le met en contact avec une ou plusieurs résines échangeuses de cations, cette résine ou l'une au moins de ces résines étant une résine de type sulfonique sous forme -SO3H ou -SO3NH4 à base d'un copolymère polystyrène-divinylbenzène dont le taux de divinylbenzène représente de 50 à 60% en poids du copolymère. Ce procédé permet plus particulièrement d'éliminer les impuretés métalliques présentes dans un tel liquide organique.
