A respirator device (1) for use in treating obstructive sleep apnea is described, with a pressure generator (3) for generating an artificial atmosphere having a treatment pressure (p act), with a pressure regulating device (10) for controlling the pressure generator (3), and with a respiratory tube (6) with a breathing mask (7) for supplying the artificial atmosphere generated by the pressure generator (3) to a patient (2), which is characterized in that it has a control mechanism (13) for the continuous determination of a pressure loss (.DELTA.p) occurring over an airway resistance (R AW) in the airways of the patient, and for the essentially proportional adjustment of the pattern of treatment pressure to the pattern of the determined pressure loss (.DELTA.p). The use of a respiratory device of this type for the treatment of sleep apnea substantially decreases the strain on the respiratory musculature of the patient, makes the course of treatment more pleasant, and decreases potential secondary effects of the treatment.
