The present invention relates to an external welder for a pipeline for welding together a junction of abutting ends of first and second pipe elements. The welder is comprised of a track mounted on the outside of the pipeline, and a carriage assembly connected to the track for carrying the carriage assembly orbitally about the axis of the pipeline on the track. A laser source is mounted on the carriage assembly to produce a laser beam. A reflecting surface is positioned in the path of the beam for directing the laser beam to the abutting ends of the first and second pipe segments. A drive is provided, mounted on the carriage assembly. The drive propels the carriage assembly around the axis of the pipeline to direct the laser beam along the junction of the abutting ends of the pipe segments for welding the pipe segments together.
