An optical modulator comprises a body of deformable material having a state of strain which changes in response to an applied electric field. The body has a modulating surface for effecting the light modulation. Opposite ends of the body, with the modulating surface between the opposite ends, are held by holding means so that changes in the state of strain result in displacement of the modulating surface between first and second positions. Electric means are provided to apply an electric field to the body to effect light modulation.

L'invention concerne un modulateur optique qui comprend un corps en matière déformable présentant un état de déformation changeant en fonction du champ électrique auquel on le soumet. Ce corps présente une surface de modulation permettant d'effectuer la modulation optique. Des extrémités opposées du corps, entre lesquelles se trouve la surface de modulation, sont retenues par des organes de maintien, de manière que tout changement de l'état de déformation entraîne un déplacement de la surface de modulation entre des première et seconde positions. L'invention concerne également des organes électriques destinés à soumettre le corps à un champ électrique permettant d'effectuer la modulation optique.
