Microcellular elastomers and a process for making them are disclosed. The process comprises reacting a resin component ("B" side) with an isocyanate- terminated prepolymer ("A" side). Pre-reacting the right proportion of chain extender into an "A" side that also includes a high-primary, low-unsaturation polyol is the key to making low-density (less than 0.5 g/cm3) microcellular elastomers while avoiding problems with poor processing or inferior physical properties. The process is easy to practice, and provides lighter, high- quality polyurethane products, including protective sports equipment, arm rests or steering wheels for the auto industry, and midsoles or shoe soles for footwear.

Cette invention a trait à des élastomères microcellulaires et au procédé de production de ces élastomères. Ce procédé consiste à faire réagir un composant résineux (coté <=B>=) avec un prépolymère à terminaison isocyanate (coté <=A>=). On fait pré-réagir la bonne proportion d'allongeur de chaîne dans un coté <=A>= comportant également un polyalcool primaire élevé à faible insaturation, ce polyol étant l'élément déterminant permettant de produire des élastomères microcellulaires de faible densité (inférieure à 0,5 g/cm?3¿) tout en évitant des problèmes dus à un traitement médiocre ou à des caractéristiques physiques inférieures. Ce procédé, qui est facile à mettre en oeuvre, permet de produire des produits à base de polyuréthanne de grande qualité et plus légers, notamment des équipements sportifs de protection, des accoudoirs ou des volants de véhicules, ainsi que des semelles intercalaires ou des semelles de chaussure.
