A subcutaneous radiation reflection probe for measur- ing oxygen saturation in living tissue includes an elongate drive shaft (4) on one end of which is detachably coupled to a mounting cup (20). The mounting cup (20) includes a hol- low (48) for receiving and holding a base element (40) on which is mounted a spiral needle (24) which coils outwardly from the mounting cup (20) to terminate in a pointed end (24a). A window (60) is formed in the spiral needle (24) near the pointed end (24a) thereof for receiving and holding a radiation emitter, such as a light emitting diode (64). A radiation detector (44) is disposed on the base element (40) within the coil of the spiral needle (24). The probe may be used to measure oxygen saturation in living tissue, such as a fetal scalp, by inserting the mounting cup (20) and drive shaft (4) through an introducer (36) into a woman's vagina until the spiral needle (24) contacts the fetal scalp.
