A biopsy device is provided. The biopsy device includes a cutter (211) which is advanced through a first portion of its stroke by a differential fluid pressure acting on a piston (204). A mechanical drive associated with the front end cap assembly (300) is used to translate and rotate the cutter (211) during tissue severing.
