Process to prepare .epsilon.-caprolactam starting from a liquid aqueous mixture containing an alcohol and 6-aminocaproic acid by cyclization of 6- aminocaproic acid in the aqueous mixture at an elevated temperature. The alcohol is separated from the starting aqueous mixture before performing the cyclization to such extent that the concentration of alcohol in the aqueous mixture during the cyclization is less than 1 wt.%. The advantages include reduced amounts of undesirable by-product.

Ce procédé de préparation de .epsilon.-caprolactame, à partir d'un mélange aqueux liquide contenant un alcool et de l'acide 6-aminocaproïque, consiste à cycliser cet acide dans le mélange aqueux, à une température élevée. On sépare l'alcool du mélange aqueux de départ avant d'effectuer la cyclisation, de manière à ce que la teneur en alcool du mélange aqueux, lors de la cyclisation, soit inférieure à 1 % en poids. Ce procédé est avantageux en ce que l'on obtient des quantités réduites de sous-produits non voulus.
