A method and apparatus for using a secondary refrigerant (14) to precool and liquefy a primary refrigerant (12), then vaporizing and expanding the primary refrigerant to cool a cold tip (20) of a cryosurgical instrument for ablation of biological tissue, such as cardiovascular tissue, in particular endocardiac tissue and tissue inside a cardiac blood vessel. The secondary refrigerant (14) has a critical temperature above the critical temperature of the primary refrigerant (12), and a cooling temperature below the critical temperature of the primary refrigerant, thereby facilitating the use of of the precooling step to provide liquid primary refrigerant in an operating room environment in which the primary refrigerant could not otherwise be provided in the liquid phase.
L'invention concerne un appareil et un procédé consistant à utiliser un réfrigérant secondaire (14) pour prérefroidir et liquéfier un réfrigérant primaire (12), puis à vaporiser et à procéder à l'expansion du réfrigérant primaire, afin de refroidir une extrémité froide (20) d'un instrument cryochirurgical servant à l'ablation de tissu biologique, par exemple le tissu cardiovasculaire et, en particulier, le tissu endocardiaque et le tissu interne d'un vaisseau sanguin cardiaque. Le réfrigérant secondaire (14) possède une température critique supérieure à la température critique du réfrigérant primaire (12), et une température de refroidissement inférieure à la température critique du réfrigérant primaire, facilitant ainsi l'étape de prérefroidissement, afin de pouvoir utiliser le réfrigérant primaire liquide dans un environnement de salle d'opération, dans lequel le réfrigérant primaire ne pourrait autrement pas être utilisé en phase liquide.
