A band multiwavelength optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) wavelength multiplexed communication network drops and adds several channels from a fiber passing many channels, while providing high isolation between the channels. The band OADM comprises a wide-band demultiplexer for separating an input multichannel optical signal into a drop multichannel optical signal of a first band, and a passthrough multichannel optical signal of a second band. The band OADM also comprises a wide-band multiplexer for combining an add multichannel signal of a third band with the passthrough signal to obtain an output multichannel optical signal. Narrow band multiplexers and demultiplexers may be used for a band of interest, to further combine or separate individual channels. The band OADM enables increase of capacity per node without affecting the passthrough loss of other channels.
