An automated system provides a user with the ability to automatically configure intermodal freight transportation in a convenient and efficient manner. In a first preferred embodiment, information relating to freight transportation resources may be accessed via the Internet and a web interface. Although it is preferred that the Internet be used for access, it is contemplated that any known type of access to a program or database would be suitable. Regardless of how a user gains access to the system, the system will provide the user with the ability to identify origination and destination information for a freight shipment that is to travel via intermodal freight carriers. Additionally, the user may enter data relating pick-up and/or delivery scheduling for the shipment. Once this information has been identified, the system automatically identifies all available trucking and rail resources which are compatible in terms of scheduling for delivery of the desired load. This information is assembled into one or more combined intermodal freight transportation alternatives that provide transportation for the freight shipment between the origination and destination locations. The information on available resources is then presented to the user for selection from among the various shipping alternatives.
