The shield is used in conjunction with a hypodermic syringe of the type having a chamber provided with an out- wardly extending flange and a needle. The syringe has a plunger movable within the cylinder from a retracted position to an extended position in order to cause liquid within the chamber to be ejected from the needle. The shield has a collar, sleeve and a handle. The collar has an opening for receipt of the chamber. The sleeve is movable from a retracted position to an extended position in which the needle, includ- ing its tip, is disposed within the sleeve. The handle is movable in one direction to cause the sleeve to move from the retracted to the extended positions but is prevented from moving in the opposite direction.
