Disclosed herein are buffered flowable nasal sprays having a pH of between 4.0 and 5Ø They are primarily water and a citrate (or citrate/phosphate) buffer. They may also contain sodium chloride, thickeners, and/or preservatives. The preparations are able to maintain the aforesaid pH under conditions simulating a runny nose. Methods of using these preparations to inhibit the spread of rhinovirus and/or diseases caused by rhinovirus are also disclosed.
