The present invention comprises a method of activating a prepaid account using an existing electronic funds transfer network which includes a point-of-sale (POS) terminal (12), debit/credit card processing infrastructure (30) and an account insurer authorization center (40). The method comprises the steps of: obtaining identification data concerning the account to be activated at the POS terminal (202); sending an activation request message including, the obtained data, from the POS terminal through the card processing infrastructure to the account issuer authorization processing center (206); receiving the activation request message at the account insurer authorization processing center (210), deciding whether or not to activate the account and generating a denial/response code based upon the activation decision, the denial/response code not resulting in the transfer of any funds (212); sending the denial/response code from the account insurer authorization processing center, through the card processing infrastructure to the POS terminal (214); and receiving the denial/response code at the POS terminal, decoding the denial/response code and confirming at the POS terminal, the activation status of the account (218). In a preferred embodiment, the account being activated is a card, such as a prepaid card.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant d'activer un compte prépayé au moyen d'un réseau électronique de transfert de fonds existant qui comprend un terminal (12) point de vente, une infrastructure (30) de traitement de carte permettant de débiter ou de créditer une carte et un centre d'autorisation (40) de l'émetteur du compte. Ce procédé consiste: à obtenir des données d'identification, au niveau du terminal (202) point de vente, sur le compte à activer; à envoyer au centre d'autorisation (206) de l'émetteur du compte un message de demande d'activation comprenant, les données obtenues du terminal point de vente via l'infrastructure de traitement de carte; à recevoir, au niveau du centre d'autorisation (210) de l'émetteur du compte, ce message de demande d'activation, en décidant s'il convient ou non d'activer le compte et en générant un code de refus/réponse fondé sur la décision d'activation, ce code de refus/réponse n'aboutissant pas à un transfert de fonds (212); à transmettre le code de refus/réponse depuis le centre de traitement de l'émetteur du compte au terminal point de vente (214), en passant par l'infrastructure de traitement de carte; enfin, à recevoir le code de refus/réponse au niveau du terminal point de vente, à décoder le code de refus/réponse et à confirmer au niveau du terminal point de vente, le statut d'activation du compte (218). Dans un mode de réalisation préféré, le compte activé est une carte, telle qu'une carte prépayée.
