Applying large-scale DNA microarray techniques, the developmental molecular programs of the hippocampus, a cortical structure critical for learning and memory has been anlyzed. Over 30,000 genes and EST sequences were screened, including an estimated 30-40% of total genes in the mouse genome. As a result, the present invention identifies 4,390 genes that showed dynamic changes during hippocampal development. Moreover, using genecluster analysis, these genes were grouped into 16 distinct clusters with striking patterns that correlate with major developmental hallmarks. The covariance analysis strategy was then applied. This enabled the identification of a group of genes whose expression may underlie the phenotypic changes in the hippocampus.

Par l'application à grande échelle de techniques reposant sur l'utilisation de micropuces à ADN, les programmes du développement moléculaire de l'hippocampe, une structure corticale essentielle pour l'apprentissage et la mémoire, ont été analysés. Plus de 30 000 gènes et séquences EST ont été criblés, notamment une proportion estimée à 30-40 % des gènes totaux du génome de la souris. La présente invention porte sur l'identification de 4 390 gènes qui ont montré des modifications dynamiques durant le développement de l'hippocampe. A l'aide d'une analyse par batteries de gènes, ces gènes ont en outre été regroupés en 16 batteries distinctes présentant des structures particulières pouvant être mises en corrélation avec les principaux repères du développement. On a procédé ensuite à l'analyse de la covariance, qui a permis d'identifier un groupe de gènes dont l'expression pourrait être à l'origine des modifications phénotypiques dans l'hippocampe.
