An artificial intervertebral disc for implantation between two adjacent vertebrae includes superior and inferior shells connected in a ball and socket arrangement. The inferior shell preferably incorporates a convex portion that cooperates with a concave portion on the superior shell. A resilient nucleus is provided within an enclosure defined by the opposing inner surfaces of the shells and biases the shells against each other. The ball portion can be provided in either fixed or slidable arrangement. The superior and inferior shells are also provided with cooperating male and female portions whereby the shells positively engage each other, thereby preventing separation, but allowing any desired articulation there-between. The artificial disc of the invention includes various resistance means for restricting and limiting the range of rotational and translational motion between the shells.

L'invention porte sur un disque intervertébral artificiel destiné à une implantation entre deux vertèbres adjacentes, lequel disque comprend des coquilles supérieure et inférieure reliées selon un agencement à rotule sphérique. La coquille inférieure incorpore de préférence une partie convexe qui coopère avec une partie concave sur la coquille supérieure. Un noyau résilient est inclus dans une enceinte définie par les surfaces internes opposées des coquilles et sollicite les coquilles l'une contre l'autre. La partie de rotule peut être disposée selon un agencement soit fixe, soit apte à coulisser. Les coquilles supérieure et inférieure comportent également des parties mâle et femelle coopérantes, grâce à quoi les coques viennent en prise de manière positive l'une contre l'autre, empêchant ainsi une séparation, mais permettant toute articulation souhaitée entre elles. Le disque artificiel de l'invention comprend divers moyens de résistance destinés à restreindre et limiter la portée d'un mouvement rotatif et translationnel entre les coquilles.
