A self contained device for automatically controlling the sound level of a TV, audio or audio-visual product without interfering with the functions or features of the existing product. This invention makes newly employed use of linear automatic gain control (AGC) circuit theory, whose function is to automatically amplify or attenuate varying input signals in order to obtain a relatively stable output signal. The automatic level-adjusting device (the subject of this invention) is connected between two audio products. It receives its input signal from conventional phono audio output jacks and sends its output signal to audio input jacks (which is a common built in feature of many, worldwide, consumer and industrial electronic audio-visual products). The received audio signal is applied to this invention's AGC circuit, which has been specifically designed to work within a predetermined range of signal levels and also as having a fixed maximum amplification level. When low input signal levels are received, the invention's AGC' circuit acts to amplify the input level to produce an output that is an amplified linear function of the input. Alternatively, when received high input signal levels reach a preset threshold value, the AGC circuit acts by attenuating the input signal in order to maintain an essentially constant output level. It is by this method of conditioning the audio signal before it is received by the existing product, that effective sound level control is achieved. This is done without direct functional interference with, or incorporation within the product.
