A ribbon package in which the ribbon is helically wound on a hollow spool. The spool is journaled for rotation about its central axis between side panels of a sleeve surrounding the spool. The spindle has end caps at each end and each cap includes a plug portion telescopically engaged in the interior of the hollow spindle and a flange spaced from the ends of the spindle to provide a circumferential groove to receive the side panels of the sleeve. A stop element is provided between the hollow interior of the spindle and the plug portion of each end cap to predetermine the spacing between the end of the spindle and the flange of the end cap to control the width of the groove so that there is loosely sufficient clearance to permit rotation of the spindle in apertures in the side panel. The perimeter of the apertures is fitted in the groove and is captured between the flange and the end of the spindle.
