A method for treating or preventing spontaneous preterm birth in pregnant women and improving neonatal morbidity and mortality. The method includes administering to a pregnant woman in need thereof an effective amount of a progesterone sufficient to prolong gestation by minimizing the shortening or effacing of her cervix. Treatment and prophylaxis with progesterone in pregnant women having symptoms of short cervix has been clinically shown to increase neonatal health.

La présente invention a pour objet un procédé de traitement ou de prévention de la naissance prématurée spontanée chez des femmes enceintes et l'amélioration de la morbidité et de la mortalité néonatale. Le procédé comprend l'administration à une femme enceinte en ayant besoin d'une quantité efficace d'une progestérone suffisante pour prolonger la grossesse en minimisant le raccourcissement ou l'effacement de son col de l'utérus. Il a été montré cliniquement que le traitement ou la prophylaxie avec de la progestérone chez des femmes enceintes présentant des symptômes de col utérin court augmente la santé néonatale.
