The invention includes a series of surgical instruments (1000) providing at least one electrode (1002) for performing electrocautery, and provides a method for cutting and cauterizing tissue with a surgical instrument. The invention involves a method for detecting the location of a bleeding vessel in a liquid-filled, visually monitored surgical field of a patient and for electrocauterizing the vessel to stop the bleeding before visualization of the surgical field is compromised. Surgical instruments according to the invention also include operable components (118) for forming a liquid cutting jet for cutting or ablating tissue of a patient and/or for providing a rotating, tissue contacting component (122) for cutting, grinding, ablating, etc. tissue during a surgical procedure. Some surgical instruments include one or more liquid conducting lumen (118, 120) therein for transporting and/or removing a liquid from a surgical operating field, which lumen, in some cases, are selectively coated with a layer of an electrically insulating material so that certain, selected, uncoated regions of an external surface of the lumen can act as an electrocautery electrode of the instrument.

Cette invention a trait à une série de dispositifs permettant de procéder à des interventions chirurgicales et utilisant des électrodes pour effectuer une cautérisation électrique du tissu corporel d'un patient. Un aspect de cette invention porte sur une série de dispositifs comprenant des instruments chirurgicaux pourvus d'au moins une électrode permettant d'effectuer une cautérisation électrique tandis qu'un autre aspect porte sur une technique de coupe et de cautérisation de tissus à l'aide d'un instrument chirurgical. Un autre aspect concerne une technique de localisation d'un vaisseau qui saigne dans un champ opératoire, surveillé visuellement, rempli de liquide, ainsi qu'un procédé de cautérisation électrique permettant de stopper l'hémorragie avant que les possibilités de surveillance visuelle ne soient compromises. Parmi les instruments chirurgicaux préférés de l'invention figurent des éléments utilisables pour former un jet coupant servant au découpage ou à l'ablation de tissu chez un patient et/ou pour constituer un élément rotatif entrant en contact avec le tissu et servant à couper, abraser, ablater, etc., un tissu lors d'une intervention chirurgicale. Certains instruments chirurgicaux selon l'invention renferment une ou plusieurs lumières de transfert de liquide servant à amener du liquide dans un champ opératoire et/ou à l'enlever. Dans certains cas, ces lumières sont revêtues de manière sélective d'un matériau d'isolation électrique, de sorte que certaines régions choisies non revêtues de la surface extérieure de la lumière peuvent faire office d'électrode de cautérisation électrique.
